🛞 Let's Learn: Building a Recovery Circle

Many people start their recovery journey by trying to do it all on their own. There are many reasons for this, but a common one seems to be that we’re trying to prove a point to ourselves that we can have total control over our addiction. Which, in hindsight, is laughable.

Imagine teaching yourself Calculus or Physics; just you and a book to read & learn. It’s not necessarily impossible, but it’s certainly the hardest way to go. And you’re more likely to give up because it’s so difficult.

Develop a support system & ask for some help. Build a recovery circle.

A recovery circle should consist of several members to act as a support system from all sides (there are no sides in a circle, but you know what I mean.) Like sports, if you build a strong team, you’ll have a strong chance at success. And you will find yourself stronger within your recovery journey.

Some suggestions to include in your recovery circle are:

    • Supportive friends & family members

    • Health Professionals

    • Counselors & Mentors

    • Self-help recovery groups such as AA, NA, & Celebrate Recovery.

Words saying one does not simply make the dream work without teamwork

Now, that being said, not everybody has access to all of these teammates. We may not all have many supportive loved ones or the means to visit professionals regularly. But self-help recovery groups are literally around the world and it is suggested to lean on these. If you need non-judgemental, caring, individuals to add to your team, hit a meeting either online or locally.

You’ll never have to face recovery alone if you can get to a meeting.

With the Holidays around the corner, many of us will be spending more time with relatives and loved ones. And as they enjoy themselves with alcohol we may find ourselves feeling left out of separated from the group.

        Fret not! Mocktails exist!

A little over 7 years ago I awoke with the full knowledge that day I would either choose life or death. I was emotionally and spiritually bankrupt. I felt what seemed to be an unsurmountable amount of anguish. In a sea of people, I was always alone. I’d drank all the fun out of the bottle and yet couldn’t walk away from it. Every day I’d promise myself “not today” and each day I would break that promise, for years!

My daughter had already lost her father to suicide and, as desperate as I was, I simply couldn’t put her through that again. I entered detox and eventually rehab. They got me dry but finding my way into the rooms of AA is what has kept me alive. Not only alive, but with a life so full of love and joy I could never have imagined would exist for me.

Through the 12 steps and traditions, my higher power, wonderful sponsorship, and the fellowship of AA, I have blossomed into the woman God intended me to become. The people in the rooms loved me until I could love myself and gladly offer that to all who cross their threshold.

The symbol of the circle and triangle is an ancient spiritual symbol meaning mind, body, and spirit together as one. You too can choose life and never be alone again.
