✒ Self-Care Hacks ✒
If you’re in recovery and starting to feel like Tom Hanks in Cast Away—but your “Wilson” is a pizza box with googly eyes—it might be time for a Loneliness Check.
Here’s the thing: Isolation is not just lonely; it’s dangerous. It’s where your inner addict throws a party, and guess who’s invited? Depression, anxiety, and that sneaky thought: “Maybe I could just have one...” NOPE. Time to cut that nonsense off at the root.
Doing a Loneliness Check means checking in with yourself and asking, “Have I spoken to a human being today who isn’t a customer service chatbot?” If the answer is no, it’s time to act. Call someone. Text your sponsor. Go to a meeting where people nod in solidarity when you say you once cried in a Taco Bell drive-thru (we’ve all been there).
Science backs this up, too. A 2018 study in the Journal of Affective Disorders found that social connectedness significantly reduces symptoms of depression and anxiety. Translation: Humans need humans. Even weird, awkward, recovering ones like us.
So if you find yourself spiraling down the Isolation Slide™, grab your recovery toolkit and do a Loneliness Check. Remember: your sober network is like Wi-Fi. You may not see it, but it's there, and it’s what keeps you connected.
Be brave. Be awkward. Be around people who get it. Because nothing says “I’ve got this” like walking into a meeting with your mismatched socks and saying, “Hey, I didn’t drink today.”
That’s not just self-care. That’s sober superpower. 🦸♂️
