🫤 Let's Learn: Change Negative Thinking

Common sense tells us that negative thinking affects us negatively. The more we think about the bad stuff in life, the more likely we are to notice more bad stuff. This kind of thinking is a risk factor that can lead to drinking or using. No matter what else we’re facing, we gotta handle that negativity.

Some types of negative thinking include negative self-labeling and all-or-nothing thinking. Examples of this include:

  • If people knew the real me they wouldn’t like me.

  • Life is hard, and I can’t handle it without using sometimes.

  • If I stop using, I’ll only start up again; I have never finished anything.

Anxiety, depression, and addiction all have negative thoughts in common. And a common fear in recovery is that it’s too hard and can’t be done. But people all around the world, with strengths and weaknesses similar to you, with determination and self-doubt, are in recovery.

Cognitive Behavioral Therapy (CBT) uses proven methods to alter negative perceptions and to treat anxiety, depression, and addiction. The key component of CBT argues that negative thinking has been learned and can, therefore, be UNlearned. It is then replaced with healthier more stabilized forms of thinking. If you change your thinking or your mindset, it can change your life.

We’ll be going into further detail about CBT in future newsletters. In the meantime, if you have any questions regarding resources please feel free to send us an email & we’ll point you in the right direction.

🍸 Mocktail of the Day🍸

An apple a day keeps the doctor away! I’m not sure how true that is, but I do know using Ritual whiskey alternative to make a Magic Apple may keep the cravings at bay (when paired with a great program of recovery).
