πŸ™Œ Daily Motivation: Healing with Kindness

Lady Gaga quote that says, "I've been searching for ways to heal myself, and I've found that kindness is the best way."

Be kind to others, be kind to yourself.

🎁 Bite-Size Therapy: The Power of Generosity

Addiction often causes us to be selfish and self-serving, but those habits can continue into sobriety as well. We can become so focused on our own challenges and recovery, that we fail to see how much generosity can help us heal, grow, and become the person we want to be.

Research shows that giving to others can give us a sense of purpose, reduce stress, boost self-esteem, and fight depression. It can even lower your blood pressure and help you live longer! All of these benefits not only help you stay clean, but generosity can make someone else's life better as well.

The science behind generosity is not completely understood, but humans are social creatures (well...some of us) and our brain rewards our social interactions with neurotransmitters like oxytocin, dopamine, and serotonin that make us feel better.

You may think you have nothing to give to others, but that's not true. You don't have to be rich or give worldly things to others to be generous. You can give your time, give compassion, or give someone support when they need it the most. Even sharing your recovery experiences and wisdom can be incredibly generous and boost your happiness!

So how can you be more generous?

Volunteer - I know you're busy, but even giving one or two hours a week to a good cause can be a wonderful experience. Try searching for non-profits and charities in your area and find one that you are interested in! If you have more money than time, then you can simply donate as well.

Give a Gift - With the holiday season upon us, you may already be giving some gifts to your friends and family, but doing so randomly can also be great! There are tons of free or cheap gifts you can give like making a handmade greeting card, giving a free massage, making someone a mixtape (yeah, I'm old...but a playlist works too!), or baking someone some sweet treats.

Random Act of Kindness - Just doing something nice. Even doing small things like saying "thank you," holding doors open, or giving sincere compliments can be amazingly generous and add a little joy to someone's day.

Become a sponsor - when you are ready, becoming a sponsor for someone else's recovery can be incredibly rewarding. It's a selfless act that can also help you make progress in your own recovery.

In my own case, the foundation stone of freedom from fear is that of faith: a faith that, despite all worldly appearances to the contrary, causes me to believe that I live in a universe that makes sense.

To me, this means a belief in a Creator who is all power, justice, and love; a God who intends for me a purpose, a meaning, and a destiny to grow, however little and haltingly, toward His own likeness and image.

Before the coming of faith, I had lived as an alien in a cosmos that too often seemed both hostile and cruel. In it, there could be no inner security for me.

When I was driven to my knees by alcohol, I was made ready to ask for the gift of faith. And all was changed. Never again, my pains and problems notwithstanding, would I experience my former desolation. I saw the universe to be lighted by God's love; I was alone no more
