😱 Daily Motivation & Therapy: Dealing with Powerful Emotions

If you're anything like me, you used substances to cope with, or downright subdue your emotions. But then you got sober... Now, every little thing may cause you to experience potent emotions that seem amplified and uncontrollable.

Learning to deal with those strong emotions is part of the recovery journey, but not an easy one. Whether you feel anger or grief, shame or disappointment, strong negative emotions can be an obstacle to sobriety. They can cloud your rationality and lead to poor decisions. Here are a few things you can do to work your way through strong emotions:

Avoid Repression: Drugs and alcohol are often a way to repress emotions and you may still try to repress your emotions during sobriety as well. Avoid doing so because you will never learn to cope and manage if you keep avoiding overwhelming feelings.

Think About It: Emotions are complicated... try taking a moment to think about your mood, get under control, and recognize why you might be feeling that way. Ask yourself these questions:

  • What am I feeling right now?

  • Why am I feeling this way?

  • What can I do about these feelings?

  • Is there a better way to cope?

Take a Deep Breath: Both literally and figuratively, a deep breath can help you calm down, create some space between the emotional trigger and your feelings, and allow you to gain perspective. Remind yourself that emotions are temporary.
