📖 Daily Motivation & Therapy: Are you Ready to Rewrite the Ending?

The stories we tell ourselves about who we are & what we can or can't do determines our reality. Our beliefs about ourselves need to occasionally be reexamined to be sure they serve us well.

Self-limiting beliefs can lead to addiction in the first place; when it comes to breaking an addiction, it is crucial first to break any limiting beliefs surrounding it. Some of these beliefs include:

  • I can’t live without drugs & alcohol.

  • I need it to have fun or enjoy life.

  • This is my new normal.

  • Alcohol isn’t the problem; everything & everybody else is.

The way you “break” a self-limiting belief is to reframe it in an empowering way. To rewrite the story.

Instead, focus on the truth & freedom that life in recovery brings & see that you are an active participant in choosing what you want. You are in control of your story from here on.

Try following these steps to help identify some of the self-limiting beliefs that may be fueling your addiction.

Step 1: Identify a judgment you make about yourself.

A judgment could sound like “I can’t tell anyone how I feel” or “nobody likes me.”

Step 2: Ask yourself, “Why?”

When you ask yourself why you believe this judgment is true, you are looking for a deeper, underlying belief in the response. One way to know that you’ve gotten to the underlying belief is that it can hurt or sting to say it out loud.

Step 3: Question & forgive the underlying beliefs.

By casting doubt on these beliefs, you start to see & understand the difference between what is false & what the real truth is. Questioning is followed by forgiveness when you can trace back to the beginning of those negative beliefs & ultimately decide to let them go.

Your beliefs create your reality, so overcoming any self-limiting beliefs you hold on to is essential. Breaking through these self-limiting beliefs can help produce a stable & lasting recovery.
