✒ Self-Care Hacks ✒
You know what’s better than a sheet mask and a lavender bubble bath? Helping another human not crash and burn the way you did. 🫠 Enter: Adopt a Newcomer—a top-tier, soul-glow self-care move that’s as healing for you as it is for the newbie you’re mentoring.
Here’s the deal: when you check in with a newcomer—even just weekly—you’re not just being a kind soul with a decent phone plan. You’re literally rewiring your brain. Studies on “helper therapy” (like one from Pagano et al., 2011) found that people in recovery who help others are more likely to stay sober themselves. Why? Because when you become a lighthouse for someone else, you stop swimming back into storms for “one more drink.”
Plus, when you mentor someone, your hot mess becomes a sacred message. Your past mistakes? Now they’re plot points in a comeback story. Every time you say, “Oh honey, don’t text your ex—just eat a sandwich and journal,” you’re not just saving her dignity… you’re healing your own past, too.
Helping others = emotional yoga. It stretches your patience, strengthens your empathy, and helps you bend without breaking. And it doesn’t require leggings!
So go on—adopt a newcomer. She doesn’t need a savior, just a sister who’s made it out the other side and lived to tell the tale (with receipts and maybe a coffee date). Your healing is contagious. Share it. 🫶
Because the best way to keep your recovery? Is to give it away like Oprah handing out keys to freedom: “You get a tip! You get a coping skill!”
Recovery gets better when we don’t do it alone.
