🦃Daily Dose of Therapy: Tips to Survive Holiday Shopping

From mid-November to January, the holidays can be incredibly stressful. On top of your everyday life & all the responsibilities that come with it, you add in all the shopping, gatherings, & traditions of celebrating & suddenly it's all too much.

One of the most common stressors is managing holiday shopping. So here are some of the top tips & tricks that recovery experts say will help you shop without having a drop.

  • Make a Budget & stick to it. Decide how much you want to spend on gifts, financial experts say no more than 1-2% of your annual income, & hold yourself to that amount. Financial stress is a potential trigger you can try to avoid.

  • Make a plan early. Only Santa can do it all in one night. You don’t have to be months ahead of everyone else, but setting a budget, saving for a bit, & completing the bulk of your shopping by early December will save you so much hassle. Less worrying about shipping times or products being out of stock, plus you’ll still have time for any last-minute sales.

  • Make a list & check it twice. Avoid tons of extra work by making shopping lists & planning out your commitments. Double-checking them can minimize multiple trips, double-booking events, and more hassles than you bargained for.

  • Listen to that cold-hearted chick from Frozen & Let It Go! So what if the gift isn’t perfect, or the yams don’t taste like Grandma’s? It is what it is! There is no better gift than the one you’re working on every day which is relearning how to be the best version of yourself through recovery. And that’s gotta taste sweeter than any candied yams!

Don’t forget about yourself. Some stress is bound to happen during the holidays. Make sure you remember to rest & recover. Sometimes that may mean taking some get centered & focus on yourself. Hit a meeting, spend some time journaling, or have a nice chat with someone in your recovery support system to help you get back on track.
